Humans tend towards a strong preference for avoiding losses over acquiring gains – to our brains it’s better not to lose £5 than it is to find £5. However you might be able to gain more from life by reframing your current approach and developing the brain’s functions which you are currently underutilising. By becoming more resilient and reframing your current situation through flexible thinking, you can maximise your brain’s performance across key functions such as emotional intelligence, logic or motivation.
We all have strengths and weaknesses, whether this be our emotional intelligence, gut instinct or logical thinking. This will often depend on what is required of us in our everyday life and work, for example, those working in highly social jobs such as teaching or nursing professions might use their emotional instincts more regularly than someone working alone in a corporate office job who might be more used to using their motivation or logic.
Being able to develop and spread our skills more evenly across these functions will help us perform in the workplace, empathise with others and adapt to change. It is unnecessary and impossible for your brain to excel equally at all functions, so focus on those which you feel will help you enhance your work life and relationships the most.
The six key functions of brain agility are included below with some ideas to begin this development:
- Logic – write yourself a to-do list setting out a schedule to help you achieve your goals with a strict timeline.
- Creativity – try using visual aids instead of written aids. For instance, use a mind map with multiple colours instead of a to-do list.
- Physical energy and resilience – make sure you are in tune to your body’s natural responses, such as sweating, blushing or getting butterflies in your stomach. These are all messages from the brain conveyed through the body.
- Intuition – try and follow messages from your intuition, whether that is doubt or confidence in your decision, and hone this skill in order improve it with wisdom and life experience.
- Emotional intelligence – keep a regular log of your emotions and feelings to help awareness of your own emotional state and encourage you to regulate your emotions accordingly.
- Motivation – think about what motivates and de-motivates you and the others around you. Declutter any negativity or other obstacles that might be hindering your progress.
