Just as we need glucose from food to fuel our brain and body, oxygen is also essential to provide energy and boost our cognitive function. You can oxygenate your brain simply by taking deep breaths which sends some extra resources to your brain when you feel stressed. However, this is only a quick fix and ultimately the best way to oxygenate your brain in the long term is through exercise – it increases your respiration rate thereby delivering more oxygen to the brain.

Try to do 150 minutes of exercise per week or at least make sure you keep moving regularly throughout the day, especially if you have an office job. As well as oxygenating the brain, physical exercise that increases your heart rate encourages sweating which excretes cortisol from your body and lowers your stress levels. Doing regular exercise can have the same effect on the brain as a low dose of anti-depressants and boosts your productivity by as much as 15%, because of higher levels of serotonin. Fresh air and sunlight from outdoor exercise provide oxygen and vitamin D, however exercising in polluted areas can decrease endorphin release, so try and find a gym or an open space such as a park to exercise in.
